Game CT4   -   Chaparral  1    Batters Up 11

Maybe the intense game with Greg's in the heat of the day had taken something out of us, but we found ourselves a little outgunned this evening.  Actually we may have just proved wrong the adage "Put it in play and good things will happen."  Every one of our 17 at bats put the ball in play (no Strikeouts), but only 3 were able to fall for base hits.

Gavin Duncan, Reggi Smith, and Avery Gallam had our base hits.   Andy Weber reached on an error and later scored our run on a bases loaded RBI walk to Avery Gallam.  We have to credit Batter's Up for some great defense in this game.  Aside from the single error in the 2nd followed by 3 walks, they pitched and played defense perfectly.

Defensively, starter Cody Skaggs was most effective, surrendering only a leadoff home run and one other base hit over 2 innings of work.  The highlight of the evening for Chaparral was seeing Joe Berry go back 10 quick steps for a great catch in left field to end the bottom of the 3rd inning - it was a fantastic play!

Game CT3   -   Chaparral  10    Greg's Pizza  9

Never give up!!!   This game may have looked over when Greg's jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the 1st inning.  However we kept battling and ended up matching their early 5 spot with one of our own in the 6th inning.  Down 8-7 and with just 3 minutes to spare on the 2 hour time limit, we brought in Gavin Duncan to pitch and were able to get them out quickly in the bottom of the 6th forcing the start of the 7th inning.  Walks to Reggi Smith and Avery Gallam proved costly as Gavin Duncan doubled them home to give Chaparral a 9-8 lead.

In the bottom of the 7th, Greg's was able to tie the game on a pair of hits and may have won it outright if not for a marvelous inning ending pickoff play from Gavin Duncan to Cody Skaggs at 2nd base.

In our half of the 8th inning, Zach Bailey doubled and then Andy Weber singled and tried to advance to 2nd on the throw toward the plate.  In the ensuing run down Zach was able to scoot home without a throw and Andy ended up safe.

In the bottom of the 8th we surrendered a 1 out double and allowed the runner to reach 3rd on an error.  Then Joe Berry made a catch in left field and threw a strike to Gavin Duncan who relayed it in plenty of time to David Dunn at the plate for the game ending double play.   There was plenty of excitement for everyone in this well earned victory.

Cody Metcalf worked the 2nd through 5th innings allowing 3 runs on 3 hits and striking out 8.  Winning pitcher Gavin Duncan gave up 4 hits for just 1 run over the final 3 innings while striking out 2.

On our side of the plate, Zach Bailey led our charge by going 3-for-3 with a double.  Gavin Duncan had a single and a double for 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.  Andy Weber added a pair of singles with an RBI.  Cody Metcalf added a hit and a walk for 2 RBIs.  Devin Hamaker and David Dunn each singled and scored.  Reggi Smith and Avery Gallam each walked twice and scored twice.

Game CT2   -   Chaparral  6    Harman Ice  16

This warm evening saw a gritty effort by the young men of Chaparral that wasn't quite enough against the powerful bats of the Harman Ice crew.  They out hit us 14-8 but the real difference was runners left of base where we stranded 11 but Harman only had 1 runner who reached but did not score.

For our pitching, Cody Metcalf went the first 3 innings allowing 6 earned runs on 8 hits and 2 walks.  The 3rd inning was particularly difficult as we added 3 fielding errors that contributed to 4 unearned runs.

Cody Skaggs came on and worked a perfect 4th inning, and allowed just 2 runs on 3 hits in the 5th.

Randal Greene pitched the 6th, surrendering 3 hits and 4 runs which put us to both the 2 hour time and 10 run limits.

There was some excitement this night in our half of the 2nd, where we pushed across 5 runs on 4 hits (3 in a row by Zach Bailey, Joe Berry, and Cody Skaggs).  The highlight of the inning was a to the fence base clearing double by Gavin Duncan

In the 6th, Andy Weber doubled over the left fielder's head and scored on Cody Metcalf's 2nd hit of the evening.

Randal Greene added our other base hit for the night.

Game CT1   -   Chaparral  15    Batters Up  1

This night our pitching and defense came to play.  Winning Pitcher Randal Greene struck out 6 over 3 innings of work, allowed only a single fly ball to left field that fell for a base hit and 2 walks for a lone earned run.

Zach Bailey worked 3 no-hit innings striking out 5 while allowing just 2 walks.

Strong defense backed them up all night as we played ERROR FREE in the field.

Offensively, Cody Metcalf led our charge with 3 singles that drove in 5 runs.  Gavin Duncan had a pair of singles for 3 RBIs.  David Dunn hit a double and had 2 RBIs.  Andy Weber added a hit for 2 RBIs and also scored 3 times.  Randal Greene had a base hit and scored 3 times.  Devin Hamaker added an RBI single.  Also, Joe Berry had a hit and scored twice.

Game 16   -   Chaparral  15    East TN Bobcats  10

Tonight it was the story of 3 pitchers which in some ways seemed like the story of 3 games.  Starter Cody Skaggs held the Bobcats to a hitless and scoreless 1st inning, but surrendered 5 straight base hits and a walk for 4 earned runs in the 2nd.

Gavin Duncan was the most effective this night, entering with bases loaded in the 2nd and earning the victory by getting 6 outs while facing 7 batters and allowing only an inherited runner to score on a wild pitch.  Cody Metcalf ended the 3rd by going back to catch a pop fly and alertly catching a base runner who had walked unable to beat the throw back to Taylor Weise at First.

Reggi Smith came on to pitch the 4th allowing a walk that was quickly erased by yet another inning ending 6-4-3 double play this time from Randal Greene to Cody Metcalf to Taylor Weise.  In the 5th, Reggi gave up 2 hits, 3 walks and hit a batter which along with an error the Bobcats were able turn into 6 runs (3 earned).

At the plate, we saw some pretty good pitching but benefited greatly from 6 walks and 7 errors on our way to the 15 runs in 5 innings.

Gavin Duncan again led our charge with a single, 3 RBIs, 3 stolen bases, and 4 runs scored.  Cody Metcalf added a 2 RBI single and a stolen base.  Likewise Zach Bailey hit a 2 RBI single and stole a base.

Randal Greene reached twice on errors, walked once, and was hit once and scored 3 times.  Cody Skaggs reached on error twice, walked once, and scored 3 times.

Devin Hamaker walked and scored twice, and hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Gavin Duncan from 3rd.    Also,  Reggi Smith walked, took a hit by pitch, and scored twice.

Game 15   -   Chaparral  10    Coca-Cola  1

Three days later the outcome couldn't have been more different.  We still out-hit Coke 6 to 3 but this time we got the benefit of being out-walked 10-2.

The story this night was our pitching.  Cody Metcalf was in top form striking out 15 and allowing only the single unearned run.   Coke's first base hit of the game was quickly erased with a David Dunn to Gavin Duncan to Taylor Weise 4-6-3 double play.  In one stretch of the game, Cody actually struck out 6 in a row and then after a popup out to shortstop Gavin Duncan, he resumed with an additional 5 consecutive K's Andy Weber added a nice catch of a deep fly to left field in the 7th inning.

Offensively, Gavin Duncan was 3-for-4 contributing half of our base hits and also racking up 5 stolen bases.  RBI base hits were added by Cody Metcalf, Taylor Weise, and Zach Bailey.    Reggi Smith walked and scored in all 3 plate appearances showing his aggressive base running skills.

Game 14   -   Chaparral  7    Coca-Cola  10

On this warm late Saturday afternoon, we had a great 1st 2 innings, but then our bats cooled, our pitching accuracy waned, and the fielding lacked the little something that had gotten us the 5 previous wins in a row.  For the game we ended up giving up 9 walks and received none - if you had to point to any one thing, that was the difference today.

Randal Greene held Coke in the first 2 innings to just 2 runs on 2 hits, but had to leave the mound with a sore arm.   Offensively at the end of those 2 innings the scoreboard stood at 7 - 2, matching team base hits.  After that point we had 5 evenly spaced base hits that just couldn't quite produce any more runs.

From that point Coke however was able to turn their 5 hits and 5 walks into 8 runs with a little help from our 4 errors in the field.

Randal Greene also led the offense with 2 hits, 2 runs scored, a stolen base, and one RBI.  Taylor Weise also had a pair of hits with an RBI and a run scored.  Andy Weber (one base hit pitch shown at left) also registered a pair of nice hits and a run scored.   For the 3rd time in the last 4 games, David Dunn pounded one just inside 3rd base for a double.  Devin Hamaker and Cody Metcalf also each added a single and 2 RBIs.  The game also saw base hits by Reggi Smith, Avery Gallam, and Cody Skaggs.

Game 13   -   Chaparral  5    American Screen Design  4

A Win is a Win is a Win...  Again on this early evening, we found just enough to come out on top in a game with 3 lead changes and we managed to hold on at the end with some really good pitching.

Winning Pitcher Gavin Duncan held ASD to 3 hits over 4 innings of work, but 5 walks, a hit batter, and 3 defensive errors allowed ASD to get 3 runs.

Zach Bailey came on to work the 5th and 6th innings to Save the victory allowing no hits, 2 walks, 1 unearned run while striking out 4 batters.

At the plate we were led by Cody Metcalf who was 3-for-4 with a stolen base.  Randal Greene had a hit, a run scored, a stolen base, and a pair of RBIs.  Avery Gallam walked twice, drove in a run on a fielder's choice, took a stolen base and scored two runs.

Also, David Dunn hit a double down the left field line and Andy Weber had a single.  Devin Hamaker hit a rocket to centerfield in the 6th inning, but the ASD centerfielder, Leland Davidson, made a great catch and turned it into a double play with a quick throw to 2nd.

Game 12   -   Chaparral  9    McLeod  8

This game was a colossal battle between two teams intent on winning.  The score after each inning was 1-0, 2-3, 3-4, 6-6, 8-6, 9-8 so it's easy to see how intense it was.  The final play came down to a one out based loaded fielders choice ground ball by Devin Hamaker where Randal Greene was able to beat the throw to the plate.

Cody Metcalf again went the distance, in this case 6 innings due to the time limit.  He allowed 8 hits, 3 walks, and a hit batter, but only 3 earned runs as we scattered 7 errors over 2nd, 3rd, and 4th innings.  Cody struck out 7 batters.

At the plate we were led by Gavin Duncan who was 3-for-3 with and RBI, a stolen base, and 2 runs scored.  Randal Greene hit a last inning double and an RBI single, had a stolen base, and scored twice.  Cody Metcalf had an RBI single, a stolen base, and run scored.  In addition to the game winning RBI, Devin Hamaker stroked an RBI double and also walked and scored.  Zach Bailey also hit a deep RBI single, but was thrown out at 2nd trying for the double.

Game 11   -   Chaparral  7    Evergreen Terrace Apartments  4

This Saturday afternoon saw moderate temperatures and a Chaparral team performance that was good enough for a victory against an Evergreen squad of just 8 players.  The men in green actually out hit us 7 to 5 but we picked up 3 more walks/hit batters than we surrendered and we did a better job of getting base runners out.

Winning Pitcher Zach Bailey went the first 4 frames looking strong, striking out 4 (3 of the first 4 batters of the game) and allowing only a single unearned run on 4 hits and 2 walks.  Taylor Weise came on for the 5th and 6th innings to seal the victory.  Taylor allowed 2 earned runs on 4 hits and just one walk.

Defensively, we ending two innings by throwing out runners attempting to steal 3rd base, one by Randal Greene and one by Cody Metcalf.  In the final inning Zach Bailey also made a great snag on a line drive headed down the right field line.

At the plate we were led by a 2 RBI double to left field by David DunnDavid also scored on the play when he dashed for an unattended 3rd base that then led to a throwing error.  Cody Metcalf had an RBI single, 3 stolen bases and scored twice.  Randal Greene, Gavin Duncan, and Joe Berry each had a single, a stolen base, and a run scored.  Zach Bailey also added a hit and a stolen base to his cause.  Devin Hamaker had a pair of RBIs on infield grounders.

Game 9   -   Chaparral  11    Campbell Morrell Music  6

Game 9 started in similar fashion to Game 10 as Morrell Music opened with 4 runs on 5 base hits and a pair of Chaparral throwing/catching errors.  But that was more than they would get the rest of the game as we ended up holding them to only 2 more runs on 4 more hits from that point forward.

Team hitting was again the theme for the home team this night as we rallied for 3 runs on 4 hits in both the 1st and 2nd innings to take a 6-4 early lead.  In the 4th we added 3 more runs on 3 more hits.  For the game we had 11 runs on 16 base hits - a truly great team display of hitting prowess.

Gavin Duncan led the offense with a triple, a pair of doubles and a single, 2 RBIs, 4 runs scored, and a stolen base.  Devin Hamaker also was 4-for-4 with a double and 3 RBIs.  Randal Greene hit a triple and a pair of singles to go 3-for-4 with an RBI, a stolen base, and 3 runs scored.  Cody Metcalf had a single and 2 RBIs.  Base hits were also added by Reggi Smith, Taylor Weise, Avery Gallam, and David Dunn.

Defensively, Cody Metcalf got the complete game victory throwing 6 innings with 3 earned runs, 3 strikeouts, 2 walks and a hit batter.  In the 2nd inning, Joe Berry made a late break but ended up with a marvelous diving catch and held on for 1 and a half tumbles to record the out.  In the 5th we snuffed a potential rally with a one out bases loaded come backer that Cody Metcalf was able to get to Gavin Duncan (yes he was catching at the time - see his form at right ;) and Gavin was able to relay to Taylor Weise to complete the inning ending double play.  In Morrell Music's final inning at bat outs 1 and 3 were recorded spectacularly as fantastic catches were made by both Gavin Duncan at shortstop and Zach Bailey in right field.  Zach's catch effectively closed the door on Morrell Music's hopes for this night.

Game 10   -   Chaparral  13    East TN Rentals (Bobcats)  4

This game started slow for us as we made 4 errors and allowed 2 runs in the top of the 1st, but in our half of the first we had 4 hits from our 1st six batters on our way to 9 runs.

Reggi Smith led the offense with an RBI triple, a single, a stolen base and a run scored.  Devin Hamaker added a pair of RBI singles, two stolen bases, and a run scored.

Gavin Duncan scored 3 times with a hit and stolen base.  Cody Skaggs had a hit and 2 walks and 2 runs scored.  Cody Metcalf had an RBI, a hit, and a run scored.  Randal, Greene, Zach Bailey and Joe Berry each had a hit and a run scored.  David Dunn scored twice on two walks and reaching on an error with a pair of stolen bases.

For the game we had 10 base hits and only struck out 3 times.  It was a good offensive performance tonight.

On the mound, winning pitcher Randal Greene was quite effective, allowing only 2 hits and 2 earned runs in the 4 inning complete game.  Randal totaled 9 strikeouts, 4 walks, and one hit batter.  In fact, only 6 of the 21 batters he faced were able to hit the ball into fair territory.

Game MT3   -   Chaparral  6    Campbell Morrell Music  7

In what can only be described as a great baseball game, Campbell Morrell Music rallied to win from a 6-3 deficit with 2 runs in the 5th, 1 in the 6th, and the game winning run in the bottom of the 7th on a deep left field walk off double by Kody Wexler.

Gavin Duncan went the distance allowing 12 hits, 5 walks, and striking out 3.

On our side of the plate, Cody Metcalf had a pair of singles and an RBI.  Randal Greene singled, scored twice and tallied 3 stolen bases.  Gavin Duncan had a single, a pair of RBIs, and a stolen base.  Also both Cody Skaggs and Reggi Smith singled and scored.  David Dunn had an RBI and a pair of stolen bases.  Lastly Devin Hamaker reached on an RBI fielder's choice and scored a run.

Game MT2   -   Chaparral  0    Greg's Pizza  15

Greg's hit us early and often this evening as they pushed 5 runs across in the bottom of the 1st on 4 hits and one hit batter and 3 fielding/throwing errors.  For the rest of the game our pitchers struggled with control and gave the men in yellow and green 5 more hit batters and 9 bases on balls.  Although we gave up only 3 hits and no errors after the first inning, the free passes proved too much and pushed them to the 15 run limit in the bottom of the 4th inning.

Offensively, we couldn't get anything going as we could only muster base hits and stolen bases from each of Cody Metcalf in the 1st and Randal Greene in the 4th.

Game MT1   -   Chaparral  3    McLeod  0

Our start in the Memorial Week Tournament saw a Complete Game Shutout thrown by Cody Metcalf.  He allowed six hits, NO WALKS, and only 1 hit batsman over 7 innings.

Our defense saved a run from scoring in the 5th with a Gavin Duncan to Reggi Smith to Taylor Weise 6-4-3 inning ending double playDevin Hamaker made a good play to end the 6th that also saved a run.

Offensively we got 2 of our runs in the first inning on a pair of singles by Gavin Duncan and Cody Metcalf, but it was actually a stolen base by Devin Hamaker that got McLeod throwing the ball around for 2 errors that allowed Gavin and Devin to score.

Taylor Weise singled to deep left center in the 2nd inning.  Avery Gallam had a base hit to the outfield in the 5th.

In the 6th, Randal Greene reached on an error and later scored on an RBI grounder by Cody Metcalf.

This was a well-earned team victory - Congratulations!

Game 8   -   Chaparral  6    Batter's Up  7

This wet and cool night the game was every bit as close as the score indicates.  Offensively, we were led by Devin Hamaker who stroked a pair of doubles for 2 RBIs and a run scored.  Zach Bailey also had a single and a run scored.

On the mound Taylor Weise led a strong effort for 4 innings, allowing only 2 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 6.  Zach Bailey came on to pitch the 5th and ended up allowing 3 runs on 1 hit, 3 walks, and a hit batter.

What hurt us this night was the wild pitch - 10 in all and 5 of those allowed runs to score, including all 3 runs in the 5th inning.

In the field Devin Hamaker make a nice pair of plays from 3rd base.  Gavin Duncan had 3 assists from shortstop, and Andy Weber made a nice catch in right field.

Game 7   -   Chaparral  2    Greg's Pizza  8

It was a much, much closer game this night than the final score shows.  Through 6 innings the score was 3 - 2, and we were just one key base hit away from knotting the score.  On the mound, Cody Metcalf went the distance allowing 2 earned runs on 11 hits with 4 walks and 8 strikeouts.  In the field Gavin Duncan made 4 plays from shortstop and Cody Skaggs went a long distance to make a difficult catch in right field.

At the plate Cody Metcalf had a pair of singles and an RBI.  Randal Greene had an RBI single and Andy Weber also had a nice base hit.  David Dunn and Avery Gallam walked and scored our runs.

Game 1 Rescheduled   -   Chaparral  0    BJ's Best Sports  10

Facing some excellent pitching, we tried hard but ended up making 12 of our 18 offensive outs by strikeout including 6 looking.  We actually did not get a ball into the outfield as Cody Metcalf got our lone base hit in the infield.  Gavin Duncan got yet another stolen base.

Defensively, we have to congratulate BJ's who got their 10 runs on 11 base hits.   Our pitchers Randal Greene struck out 2 over 2 innings and Gavin Duncan struck out 4 in 4 innings of work.  Also Cody Skaggs made an excellent catch at 2nd base.

After the game, six players as shown stuck around for a hard-work session of batting and fielding practice.  Everyone who participated showed much improvement during the session, so this was our victory this day to carry into next week.

Game 6   -   Chaparral  1    Harman Ice  13

We played one of the league's best teams this night and they looked like it.  We helped them a little with 7 walks and 5 errors, but they also had 10 base hits against our best pitching from Cody Metcalf for 4 innings and Taylor Weise for 1.

Defensively we had a nice play from Gavin Duncan to start the game.  In the same inning, from Right Field Andy Weber threw out a runner attempting to stretch a single. David Dunn made 3 nice plays for outs at his 2nd base position in the 4th.  Also in the 5th inning Randal Greene caught a runner off of first base that resulted in a team effort 2-3-6-1-5-6 in the ensuing run down for the out.

On the offensive side, Gavin Duncan had a base hit, stole 3 bases, and scored our run.  Cody Metcalf hit an RBI single.

Game 5   -   Chaparral  1    Johnson City Press 8

Not too much went right tonight.  The game started and ended with a Randal Greene drive well into centerfield that was caught for an out.  Randal did lead our offense with a pair of singles in his other 2 at bats and he scored our run.  Gavin Duncan and Cody Metcalf also added a single and a double respectively to our effort.  We made an unusual pair of outs at home plate and also got called out on a pickoff move to 2nd base.

In the field, we had good pitching from Gavin Duncan for 4 innings and Zach Bailey for 2, but our 4 fielding errors in the 3rd inning along with a hit, a walk, and a hit batter ended up allowing Press to get 5 runs in the frame.

Game 4   -   Chaparral  11    Evergreen Terrace Apartments  5

Winning Pitcher Cody Skaggs got us going strong with 2 K's, only 1 walk, 3 hits, and 1 run allowed over 2 innings.  Then Taylor Weise pitched the 3rd and 4th innings, allowing 4 runs but only 1 earned as we made a trio of defensive errors.  Taylor threw for 3 K's, 2 hits, and 3 BB's.

When the game got close at 7-5, Cody Metcalf was called in to put out the fire, and that he did with 3 K's, 1 BB, 1 hit, but no runs allowed in the final 2 frames.

At the plate we were led by Devin Hamaker with 2 hits and 2 RBIs.  Taylor Weise and Andy Weber each had a base hit with an RBI.  Cody Metcalf scored 3 times, and had a hit for a pair of RBIs.

Game 3   -   Chaparral  4    American Screen Design 3

Our first win this season came in similar fashion to our first loss - a close game won by good defense.

Winning Pitcher Randal Greene threw the first 3 innings allowing 2 runs on 2 hits and 4 walks and getting 3 strikeouts.  Cody Metcalf pitched the final 3 frames allowing just 1 unearned run on 3 hits and 2 walks with 5 K's.

The offense was led by Cody Metcalf who was 3-for-3 with 2 doubles and a single.  Cody and Gavin Duncan each scored two runs.  Gavin, Zac Campbell, and Devin Hamaker also had base hits.

Defensively Devin Hamaker made 3 plays for outs from 3rd base.  Taylor Weise made an excellent catch of a short hopped throw for an out.

Game 2   -   Chaparral  3    McLeod  4

Tough loss in a hard fought close game decided in the last inning when a rundown throw bounced off the helmet of a runner between 3rd and home.

Chaparral saw 3 fine innings of pitching from starter Taylor Weise who struck out 5 hitters, walking just one, and allowing only 2 unearned runs.  Gavin Duncan pitched the final 3 innings also allowing 2 unearned runs.

Team base hits were 3 apiece, with our 3 hits coming from Randal Greene, Gavin Duncan, and David Dunn.

We showed plenty of room for improvement in fielding and throwing where we made a total of 8 errors in the 6 inning contest.

Jamboree Scrimmage  Chaparral 10  Greg's Pizza 5

Jamboree Scrimmage at Cardinal Park vs. Greg's Pizza  -  This 90 minute scrimmage ended after just 2 innings with Chaparral leading by a score of 10-5.

Gavin Duncan had a single in our 4 run 1st inning.  Our bats came alive in the 2nd inning as a 6 run effort was led by consecutive base hits from Cody Metcalf, Taylor Weise, Devin Hamaker, and Reggi Smith.

On the mound Randal Greene pitched the 1st yielding just one run and Gavin Duncan finished the second allowing no earned runs, but 2 fielding errors ended up allowing 4 runs.
