Tournament Finals   -   Chaparral 7   Johnson City Press 3

Outstanding team effort allowed Chaparral to prevail in this one.   We got our 7 runs on 5 hits and 7 walks but our defense held Press to just 3 runs on 8 hits and just 2 walks by getting the outs necessary to strand 9 of their runners on base over 7 innings.  It was definitely a team effort as Cody Metcalf pitched the first 4 innings allowing just 1 unearned run on 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 4.  Then Taylor Green came on for the 5th and 6th innings holding Press to just 1 run on 3 hits.  Finally, our closer, Billy Byrd took the hill for the 7th and gave up just 1 run on a hit and a walk also but got 3 ground balls for the outs we needed to end the Championship game.

Offensively, we faced some tough pitching which struck us out 13 times in 6 innings but we managed two rallies each started by a base hit by Randal Greene.  Both times Taylor Green got big RBI singles.  In the 3rd inning we put up 4 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks.  In the 5th it was for 3 runs on those 2 hits and 3 walks.

Defensively, Will Burton made 3 excellent plays from third base and Marcus Arnett took away a base hit with a great charge from centerfield on one of his 3 catches.

Tournament Semi-Finals   -   Chaparral 11   Batters Up 7

Absolutely excellent come from behind effort by the whole Chaparral Team!!!   We out-hit the men in blue by a count of 10-5.   Reggi Smith was Mr. Clutch at the plate coming through with 2 very big hits for 3 RBIs.  Marcus Arnett had a pair of doubles with 2 runs scored.  Gavin Duncan had a hit and 3 runs scored.  Cody Metcalf had 2 hits, 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored.  Billy Byrd had a big double and a single for 3 RBIs, and also scored twice.

Will Burton pitched the first 4 innings allowing 3 runs (only 1 earned) and he was ON striking out 7 batters!  Taylor Green pitched a perfect 5th but got in trouble after a trio of defensive errors in the 6th.  Winning Pitcher Billy Byrd was called in and got 3 of 4 batters he faced out to finish the inning.

As always there's room for improvement.  We spaced out 7 fielding/throwing errors that may have hurt us bad if it weren't for the offensive heroics in the bottom of the 6th where we were down 7-5, but proceeded to add 6 runs on 3 walks and 3 big hits that ended up putting us over the 2 hour time limit.

Tournament Game 1 Result  -   Chaparral 14   Greg's Pizza  9

A close game through 5 innings where we held a 5-2 margin.  We added 3 in the sixth and then came the 7th inning where hits, errors and walks abounded for both teams.

Winning pitcher Cody Metcalf gave us 3 strong innings allowing just 2 hits, 2 walks, and 1 unearned run.  Will Burton matched the effort with 3 innings just as strong allowing 3 hits, 2 walks, and 1 unearned run.

Taylor Green had a significant defensive role by starting 2 double plays, a 4-6-3 in the 2nd inning, and a very nice 4-U, 4-3 in the 4th inning.

On offense Cody Metcalf was 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored, Marcus Arnett had a hit, 3 stolen bases, and 4 runs scored.

Game 16 Result -    Chaparral 19    East TN Rentals (Bobcats) 4

What a difference a couple of days makes.  Tonight we could do little wrong as in the bottom of the first inning we had 7 hits and 3 walks for 11 runs.  Marcus Arnett scored 4 times going 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles including one that hit the fence.  Gavin Duncan also scored 4 times on a hit and 3 walks.  Our team had 10 base hits for the game vs. 3 for the Bobcats.

Cody Metcalf gave us 3 strong innings on the mound striking out 5  and walking just 2.  Gavin Duncan closed the deal by striking out 2 in a perfect 4th and final inning.

Game 15 Result -    Coca Cola 13  -  Chaparral 1

They had our number tonight....  Congrats to Coke pitcher Jake McIntosh for holding us to just 3 singles by Randal Greene, Cody Metcalf, and Billy Byrd.  In the field we simply struggled to make outs and Coke hit several balls where they had to go for base hits.

Will Burton took the loss going 3 innings with most of the runs surrendered being unearned.  Marcus Arnett came on to pitch the 4th, and Billy Byrd closed out the 5th before the run rule ended the game after our turn at bat.

Game 14 Result -    Chaparral 9   American Screen Design  6

Thanks again to Thad Cole, who again allowed us to start a legal game and finish with 8 players.

Cody Metcalf pitched 4 innings allowing only 4 batters on base for just 1 earned run while notching up 7 K's.  Cody also accounted for 4 of our team's 8 hits by going 4-for-4 at the plate.  Marcus Arnett hit a solo Home Run shot in the 5th inning way over the left-center field fence.   Devin Hamaker also added a pair of singles to our cause.

Reggi Smith came on to pitch 1 and 2/3 innings and then Gavin Duncan struck out the 1 batter he faced to end the game.

Game 13 Result -   Chaparral 9   McLeod  4

Thanks to Thaddeus Cole, we were able to start with 9 players and finish strong with 8.  After Tuesday night's rain after just 3 batters, 3 of our players left town Wednesday morning and without Thad there would have been no make-up game Wednesday night.

And strong we were in the bottom of the 4th inning where we made the most of 3 hits (big doubles by Marcus Arnett and Billy Byrd, and a single by Cody Metcalf), 3 walks, and 2 errors on our way to sending 10 batters to the plate in spite of two automatic outs when the 9th spot came around.   Billy Byrd had half our hits with a double and a single.

Defensively, the strikeout was our weapon of choice where starting pitcher Gavin Duncan got 3 in 1 and 1/3 innings and winning pitcher Billy Byrd racked up 9 over 3 and 2/3 innings of relief - (the first two coming with bases loaded when he entered the game).  For the game we had 4 hits vs. 3 for McLeod.  We benefited from 9 walks but gave up 10.  We played well in the field, catching a runner stealing at 2nd and making nice plays from third and short to first for outs.

Game 12 Result - Chaparral 12   Evergreen Terrace Apartments  2

On this warm Saturday afternoon we out-hit Evergreen 6 - 4 and out-received BBs+HPs 8 - 7.  The real game difference was fielding errors where we made NONE and received the benefit of 7.   We also gave up only one wild pitch and one passed ball which also was a key difference.  Winning Pitcher Taylor Green worked 2 and 2/3 striking out 3 with Billy Byrd getting us out of a bases-loaded tight spot with a key strikeout.  Cody Metcalf worked the 4th and 5th scoreless innings giving up just 1 walk and 1 hit and racking up 3 strikeouts.  Cody also led the offense with an RBI double and a single and scoring all 3 times he batted.

Game 11 Result - Chaparral 11   Bobcats 3

Back to a healthy roster of 12 players, Cody Metcalf led our offense by going 4-for-4 with a triple, 2 doubles, and a single. Will Burton and Randal Greene each added a pair of singles. Will Burton went the 6 inning complete game distance with 13 strikeouts and zero, nada, zilch, that is NONE!!! in the walk category.  Great job Will.

Tournament Game 4 Result -   Harman Ice 16   Chaparral 9

Down to nine players with almost everyone hurting somewhere, we showed a lot of heart by never giving up, but we were outgunned by several Harman base hits that were just "out of our grasp".  On base hits we had 10 and Harman had 13.  Bases on balls we gave up 7 and got 5.  We had 7 left on base vs. 5 for Harman.  Fielding errors we had 1 and they had two.  Gavin Duncan, Taylor Green, and Billy Byrd led our offense with 2 hits each.

Tournament Game 3 Result -   Chaparral 16   ASD  7

This game started out close looking like a well played pitcher's duel.  But in the 5th and 6th innings our bats erupted with 7 hits and 6 hits respectively.  On the mound Taylor Green went 4 strong innings allowing 3 hits, 2 walks, and 2 unearned runs.  Cody Metcalf pitched the 4th allowing 1 hit and 1 unearned run.  Then Reggi Smith pitched the 5th to close out the victory.  Offense was strong and often with Gavin Duncan, Cody Metcalf, and Billy Byrd each getting 3 hits.  Taylor Green and Reggi Smith each had two base hits.  The team had 16 base hits total in the 6 inning game.

Tournament Game 2 Result -   Batters Up 11   Chaparral 7

We fought hard but again we were outdone by our frequent nemesis --- Ball 4...  Our two pitchers issued 9 in the second inning and 8 of those eventually scored which obviously became the deciding factor of the game.  Otherwise, we out-hit Batters Up 6-5 including nice shots to the fence for triples by Billy Byrd and Taylor Green.  Billy also had a single and Randal Greene laid down a very nice bunt for a base hit.  Marcus Arnett dived like a swimmer off the blocks for a fantastic snag of a ball hit hard to his left near third base.  Cody Metcalf also made a great move back for a catch of a short fly ball behind 2nd base.

Tournament Game 1 Result - Chaparral 12   Evergreen 11

Cody Metcalf had the walk-off sac fly scoring Gavin Duncan from third for the deciding run.  Marcus Arnett had two doubles and a single.  Gavin Duncan also had 3 hits.  Two hit performances were turned in by Taylor Green, Cody Metcalf, Billy Byrd, and Joe Berry.  The team had 16 total base hits vs. 9 for Evergreen.  Billy Byrd pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief allowing no earned runs for the win.

Game 10 Result - Chaparral 19   Coca Cola 4

19 runs across on 18 team base hits.  Team batting average for the game was .600  Marcus Arnett led the charge by going 4 for 4 with 3 runs scored.  This included a double to left field that was just 18 inches short of being a grand slam.  Gavin Duncan had 3 hits.  Taylor Green, Billy Byrd, Joe Berry, Zac Campbell, and David Dunn each had 2 hits.  Cody Metcalf struck out 6 in 3 innings of pitching.  Brad Ross worked the mound for the 4th inning striking out 1 and facing just 4 batters thanks to an outstanding pickoff move to 3rd base that ended the game.

Game 9 Lost by Forfeit to Campbell Morrell Music

4 Players out of town and 1 unaccounted caused us to have only 8 present.

Game 8 Result  -   Batter's Up 10    Chaparral 7

A tough loss after getting a 5 run lead in the top of the 1st.  After that we faced some excellent pitching and managed to put up two more runs.  Marcus Arnett and Taylor Green combined with some good pitching of our own, but six fielding and throwing errors simply allowed too many baserunners.   Cody Metcalf led our offense with 2 hits and Taylor Green hit a nice double.  Team hits were 7 for Chaparral and 8 for Batter's Up.  In eight games, we've lost four but this marks the first time we have been out-hit by our opponents.

Game 7 Result  -   BJ's 10   Chaparral 6

Another full 7 inning contest where base hits matched up even at 7 a piece.  Marcus Arnett led the Chaparral offense with a triple that hit at the base of the fence and a single.  Taylor Green also had two singles.  Gavin Duncan and Taylor Green pitched well enough, but several mental and throwing errors in the field and one very bad manager made 3rd base coach decision proved costly.

Game 6 Result  -   Chaparral 6   Greg's Pizza 5

Full 7 inning contest which got very tight at the end.  Will Burton pitched a great complete game yielding only 3 hits and 5 walks.  Gavin Duncan came through in the clutch with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th with a walk-off base hit that scored Marcus Arnett from third.   Cody Metcalf had 2 of Chaparral's 6 hits with an RBI and a run scored.

Game 5 Result  -   Chaparral 11   Harman Ice 1

Excellent game for Chaparral as we started with Taylor Green making an outstanding catch in centerfield and completing the throw to second for the double play.  Then 3 of our first 4 batters got base hits producing 5 runs in the first inning.  Cody Metcalf was very strong on the mound, holding Harman to just 1 run on 3 hits and 4 walks through 4 innings.

Will Burton led the offense with 3 hits including a double.  Billy Byrd and Cody Metcalf also were on base 3 times with each earning a pair of hits and a walk.  Team batting average for the game was .409   It's hard to lose when you hit that well.

Game 4 Result  -   Johnson City Press 15   Chaparral 12

See-saw game where we ran out of time while our side was down.  Again we out-hit our opponents 7 to 5 but also out-walked them 10 to 5.   We also contributed 8 fielding errors that shows some room for improvement.

Marcus Arnett led the offense with a Double and a Single and 2 runs scored.  Likewise Gavin Duncan had 2 hits and 2 runs scored.  Also Taylor Green had a deep sacrifice fly to drive in a run.

Game 3 Result  -   Chaparral 22   Evergreen Terrace Apartments 4

Strong performance at the plate after early batting practice as the team got 12 base hits in 5 innings of play.  Three hits for Billy Byrd including a triple and a double.  Will Burton had a double and a triple.  Both Cody Metcalf and Gavin Duncan had a double and a single.  Also Zac Campbell had a pair of singles.

Gavin Duncan got the complete game victory on the mound going all 5 innings.

Game 2 Result  -     Chaparral 6    American Screen Design 5

First big win came tough as Marcus Arnett pitched 4 strong innings followed by Will Burton retiring 6 batters in a row.  Outstanding defensive plays were made by Cody Metcalf, Marcus Arnett, and Billy Byrd.

Cody Metcalf had 3 hits.  Marcus Arnett, Randal Greene, and Will Burton each delivered two hits.

Randal Greene delivered the walk-off bases loaded hit over the left-fielder's head.

Game 1 Result  -     McLeod 9     Chaparral 4

Tough loss for the young men of Chaparral who out-hit McLeod 8 to 3, but gave up 14 bases on balls vs. receiving only 2.  The extra baserunners proved to be the difference.

Cody Metcalf had a pair of singles.

The game also saw big hits by Joe Berry, Zac Campbell, and Marcus Arnett.
